Programs for DC Public and Public Charter School Teachers

American University and DCPS: The School of Education, Teaching & Health has a long tradition of working with teachers in DC Public and DC Public charter schools. Click here to access a website that highlights some of our relationships with DC Public Schools and shows a brief overview of the different programs that help teachers.

The programs listed below were created especially for DC teachers who are either beginning their teaching careers or looking to expand their current teaching expertise and skills.

Alliance for Quality Urban Education (AQUE) - A Teacher Quality Enhancement Partnership Grant

  • Graduate Certificates for Licensure in Elementary Education, Secondary Education and ESOL.
  • Plus opportunities for experienced teachers to take content specific courses and NBPTS preparation courses.

Capital Excellence: Recruiting, Preparing and Retaining Talented Urban Teachers - A Transition to Teaching Grant

  • Graduate Certificates for Licensure in Early Childhood Education.

2009 Summer Content Courses Designed for K-12 Teachers

Non-degree Content Courses for DC Public and DC Public Charter School Teachers

Current Research and Professional Development Programs

The United States Postal Service Health Promotion Program funds AU’s National Center for Health and Fitness for managing USPS’s Employee Health Promotion Program at its Washington, D.C., headquarters for some 2,500 employees.

Recent Projects

Theory into Practice: Enhancing the Teaching of the Visual Arts in District of Columbia Public Schools assists visual arts teachers in the theory and practice of their own art and teaches them instructional strategies for enlivening student learning about art.

The Ronald E. McNair Post baccalaureate Achievement Program offered undergraduate students from underserved populations the opportunity to take part in research and other scholarly activities, which helps in gaining entrance into graduate and PhD programs.

Shared Goals examines elements of professional development for teachers at each level of the NCATE Continuum of Teacher Preparation and Development. Its funding has enabled the school to develop a new electronic portfolio system for all teacher education students.

Strengthening the Teaching of American History provides American history educators from the District and around the country with strategies for improving student understanding and appreciation of traditional American history.
