Vivian Vasquez

Research and Teaching Interests: Dr. Vasquez' research and teaching focus primarily on critical literacies, early childhood and elementary education, and education for social justice and equity.

Recent publications: Three books, Getting Beyond I Like the Book-Creating Spaces for Critical Literacy in K-6 Settings, Negotiating Critical Literacies with Young Children, and Literacy as Social Practice. Upcoming publications include two books, Critical Literacies Across the Curriculum, and Creating Spaces for Critical Literacy with English Language Learners. Other publications include book chapters and articles published in Language Arts, Phi Delta Kappa, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Reading Teacher, UKRA Reading, Primary Voices, and Reading Today.

Professional / Field experiences: Prior to coming to AU, Dr. Vasquez taught pre-school and public school for fourteen years. Since then she has held appointive and elective offices in scholarly organizations including, The National Council of Teachers of English, The American Educational Research Association, The International Reading Association and The Whole Language Umbrella. Recent honors include receiving the 2004 AERA Teacher Research Dissertation Award, the 2005 NCTE James N. Britton Award, and the 2006 AERA Division B Outstanding Book of the Year Award for Negotiating Critical Literacies with Young Children. Dr. Vasquez is also host of the CLIP(critical literacy in practice) Podcast located at www.clippodcast.com

Also prior to coming to AU Dr. Vasquez taught courses at Indiana University, in Indianapolis and Bloomington, as well as Mount Saint Vincent University and York University, in Canada.
